El Grifo, the oldest winery in the Canary Islands, makes this Lanzarote rosé from pre-phylloxera Listán Negro grown on volcanic sand. Pale in colour, it shows strawberry, raspberry and a saline, mineral edge from the island’s black soils.
Description
El Grifo was founded in 1775 in San Bartolomé and is the oldest winery in the Canary Islands, working D.O. Lanzarote vineyards planted on black volcanic sand. The vines are ungrafted, pre-phylloxera Listán Negro, the dominant red grape of the island. Lanzarote's growing conditions are unusual: at latitude 28 degrees the vines do not naturally stop growing, so dormancy is forced by pruning in February, and the constant Atlantic trade winds, the alisios, moderate the heat and slow ripening. The porous volcanic ground, known locally as picón, retains overnight moisture and feeds the saline, mineral character that runs through the wine. This bottling is made as a lágrima, from free-run juice released by the weight of the grapes alone rather than pressing, which keeps the colour pale and the texture light. The result is a pale pink rosé with aromas of strawberry, raspberry and citrus peel over a clear saltiness. The palate is dry and fresh, with red berry and lemon fruit and a savoury, stony finish that reflects the volcanic terroir. Serve well chilled at around 8 degrees as an aperitif or with grilled fish and shellfish.
