Telmo Rodriguez makes Lindes de Remelluri Vinedos de Pecina in Rioja from old plots of Garnacha and Tempranillo. Aged 12 months in barrel, it shows deep cherry fruit, plum and a savoury, concentrated village character.
Description
Lindes de Remelluri is Telmo Rodriguez's project to revive the small, low yielding vineyards that once defined Rioja, working with the growers who held on to them. This wine comes from the plots of Pecina, in the San Vicente de la Sonsierra sector of Rioja, where poor clay limestone soils on the slopes below the Sierra de Cantabria give Garnacha and Tempranillo concentration with freshness. The altitude and continental climate widen the diurnal range, slowing ripening and preserving acidity so the wine stays balanced at 14 percent. Ageing for 12 months in barrel rounds the tannins and adds a light spice while keeping the fruit and terroir at the centre. Tempranillo gives structure and dark fruit, Garnacha adds warmth and red berry lift. The wine is deep cherry red, the nose showing concentrated black cherry and plum with earth, dried herbs and a savoury edge. The palate is medium to full, the tannins fine and firm, the acidity fresh, the finish long and savoury. Serve at 16 degrees. It suits lamb, grilled beef and mushroom dishes.
