Gran Rodma is the top red from Finca Rodma, grown in the golden mile of Ribera del Duero from Tinto Fino. Twenty months in oak barrels give ripe black fruit, sweet spice and a deep, structured palate.
Description
Finca Rodma, run by the Martin Rodriguez family, makes Gran Rodma as its flagship wine in the so called golden mile of Ribera del Duero, the prized stretch around La Horra and Roa. The grape is Tinto Fino, the local Tempranillo. Ribera's high altitude and harsh continental climate are central to its character: scorching days and cold nights slow ripening, hold acidity and deepen colour, while the limestone and clay soils drain freely and keep yields low, concentrating the fruit in the thick skinned berries. After fermentation the wine ages twenty months in oak barrels, a long elevage that polishes the firm tannins, stabilises colour through slow oxygen exchange and layers in vanilla, toast and sweet spice. The result is a dense, deeply coloured red, with ripe plum and blackberry on the nose over cocoa, vanilla, tobacco and toasted oak. The palate is full and powerfully structured, with ripe, gripping tannins and a long, spiced finish. At fourteen and a half percent it stays balanced. Serve at sixteen to eighteen degrees and decant; it is built for roasted red meats.
