Can Ràfols dels Caus grows this Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Xarel·lo blend on the limestone of the Garraf massif in D.O. Penedès. Held on lees in bottle for two years, it is creamy yet fresh, with lemon, ripe peach and white flowers over a chalky base.
Description
Gran Caus Blanc is a white from Can Ràfols dels Caus in D.O. Penedès, Catalonia, grown in the heart of the Massís del Garraf where limestone shapes both the landscape and the wines. The estate was restored by Carlos Esteva from 1979, and the Gran Caus line was among his first wines in the 1980s. The blend brings together Chardonnay for body, Chenin Blanc for acidity and Xarel·lo for its local, mineral character. Limestone soils drain well and reflect warmth while holding cool at depth, which helps the grapes ripen fully while keeping a firm acid backbone. The wine is given extended time in bottle, around 24 months, a slow ageing that lets the components knit together and adds a subtle creaminess without heavy winemaking. The result is fresh but textured. The nose shows lemon and ripe peach lifted by white flowers, and the palate is creamy and rounded yet cut through by acidity and a chalky, mineral finish. It drinks well now but has the structure to hold. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass. Good with white fish, roast chicken, shellfish and nutty cheeses.
