Gramona makes this ice wine in Penedes from organically farmed Gewurztraminer. Made in the vin de glace style with frozen grapes, it concentrates the variety’s rose and lychee perfume alongside apricot, honey and a bright lemony lift at just 9.5% alcohol.
Description
Gramona produces this sweet wine in D.O. Penedes in Catalonia, from organically farmed Gewurztraminer, an aromatic variety prized for its perfume. It is made in the style of an Eiswein or vin de glace, where the grapes are frozen so that water crystallises out and the press yields only the concentrated, sugar-rich juice. Penedes does not naturally freeze grapes on the vine as the classic cold-climate regions do, so the freezing is carried out to recreate that concentration, intensifying both sugar and the variety's floral aromatics. Fermentation is then stopped with a high level of residual sugar, leaving the alcohol low at 9.5% and preserving the grape's character. No oak is used, keeping the focus on pure aromatic fruit. The colour is bright pale gold. The nose is intensely perfumed, with rose, apricot, white peach, honey and elderflower in the Gewurztraminer style. The palate is sweet and silky but kept fresh by a clean, lemony acidity that stops it turning heavy, finishing long and floral. Serve well chilled, around 8 degrees, in a small glass. It suits stone-fruit and apricot desserts, light cakes and fresh young goats' cheese.
