GR makes 65-5 in the D.O. Montsant, the slate-and-clay appellation that rings Priorat, from Garnacha and Samso. Twelve months in oak and sustainable farming give dark fruit, pepper and a firm, mineral structure.
Description
GR makes this red in the D.O. Montsant, the Catalan appellation that encircles Priorat and shares much of its character, from Garnacha and Samso, the local name for Cariñena. Montsant's vineyards sit on a mix of slate, clay and limestone, the poorer stony soils giving the wines a mineral grip and concentration close to their famous neighbour, while the hot, dry summers ripen the Garnacha fully and the cool nights off the surrounding hills hold the acidity. The estate farms sustainably. After fermentation the wine ages twelve months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange knits the tannin together and adds spice and depth. It is deep, dark ruby. The nose is intense, with ripe plum and black cherry over black pepper, liquorice and a stony, earthy minerality. The palate is full and structured, the Samso bringing firm tannin and freshness, the Garnacha lending plush dark fruit, all carried by a mineral grip through a long, savoury finish. This is a serious, well-priced Catalan red. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted an hour ahead, in a large glass. It suits grilled and roasted red meats.
