Description
GR-174 is a Priorat red from GR, built from vineyards spread across eleven municipalities of the appellation and a wide field blend led by Garnacha with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Tempranillo. The vines grow on terraces and steep slopes of red and black slate, the licorella that gives Priorat its concentration and mineral grip by driving roots deep through the fractured rock. Summers here are hot and dry and winters cold, with temperatures dropping below zero, a continental swing that ripens the fruit fully while holding structure and freshness. The harvest is by hand into small boxes, and the wine ages five months in French oak, a shorter time that firms the tannins and adds a little spice and smoke while keeping the focus on fruit and place. The wine speaks clearly of its landscape. The nose shows ripe red and black fruit, cassis, blackberry and raspberry, over pepper, liquorice and a smoky mineral note, while the palate is full bodied and structured with grippy tannins and an earthy core. The finish is long, at 14.5 percent alcohol. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanting younger bottles. It suits grilled and roast red meats.
