Description
GR-171 comes from Casa Gran del Siurana, a winery set up by the Peralada Group in Bellmunt del Priorat, working Garnacha Blanca in the neighbouring D.O. Terra Alta. Terra Alta is the grape's heartland, a warm inland region of limestone and clay soils cooled by the Cierzo wind that blows down the Ebro valley, tempering the heat and preserving freshness. Garnacha Blanca ripens to a fuller, riper style here, with more body and a characteristic fennel or aniseed note. This wine is fermented and raised in stainless steel, a method that keeps the fruit clean and locks in the grape's ripe character with no oak influence. The colour is pale gold. The nose is ripe and rounded, with white peach, melon, pear and a subtle dried-herb, fennel edge. The palate is medium-bodied and balanced, the ripe fruit carried by enough acidity to keep it fresh through a clean, faintly saline finish. This is a warm-climate white with weight and easy appeal. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
