Goyo García recovers old vineyards in Ribera del Duero and works with minimum intervention. This young, natural Tinto Fino is unaged and vegan, showing fresh red berries, cherry and an earthy, herbal lift rather than the region’s usual weight.
Description
Goyo García Viñas Viejas is a young, natural red from the D.O. Ribera del Duero, made from Tinto Fino, the local name for Tempranillo, by a grower who set out to rescue old vineyards full of potential. The son of the family behind Bodega Valduero, he champions minimum intervention in both vineyard and cellar. The old vines at the heart of this wine sit on the limestone and clay-limestone soils of the upper Duero, where a harsh continental climate and a wide day-to-night temperature swing slow ripening and lock in colour, acidity and aromatic detail. Made in a low-intervention style, the wine is unoaked and bottled young, so nothing stands between the grape and the glass: no barrel vanilla, no extended ageing, just the fresh, savoury fruit and structure of old-vine Tinto Fino. The colour is bright, vivid ruby. The nose leads with fresh red berries and cherry over an earthy, herbal note with a rhubarb tang. The palate is medium-bodied and lively, the tannins fine, the acidity bright and the finish clean and savoury. Serve a touch cool, at 14 to 16 degrees, with roast lamb, pork or mushroom dishes.
