Castell del Remei makes Gotim Bru in Costers del Segre from estate vines averaging 20 years, blending Tempranillo and Garnacha with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Ten months in French and American oak give a layered red of red fruit, pepper and spice.
Description
Gotim Bru comes from Castell del Remei, a winery built in 1780 at Penelles in Lleida, within Costers del Segre. The blend brings together Tempranillo and Garnacha with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, all grown on the estate's Finca Castell del Remei, where around 70 of its 400 hectares are vineyard and the vines average 20 years old. Yields are kept low at about 6,000 kilograms per hectare, which concentrates the fruit. The five-grape blend layers Tempranillo's red fruit and structure with Garnacha's weight, the cassis and firm tannin of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot's roundness and Syrah's pepper. Ageing runs ten months in French and American oak, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds vanilla and spice. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows red berry preserve, plum and liquorice over black pepper and sweet oak. The palate is medium to full bodied, with ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a spiced, lingering finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, decanted briefly. It suits grilled and roast red meats and mushroom dishes.
