Gorka Izagirre, a leading Bizkaia producer, makes this rare red txakoli from the local Hondarrabi Beltza grape. Picked young and low in alcohol at 12.5 percent, Ilun shows bright red berries, cracked pepper and a coastal, saline freshness.
Description
Txakoli is the traditional wine of the Basque Country, usually white, young and low in alcohol, but Gorka Izagirre has helped lead its modern revival, here in red form. Ilun, meaning dark in Basque, is made from Hondarrabi Beltza, the region's indigenous red grape. The vineyards sit close to the Atlantic coast in Bizkaia, where a cool, humid maritime climate and frequent sea breezes keep ripening slow and acidity high. These conditions, together with the salt-laden air, give txakoli its characteristic brisk freshness and saline edge. The wine is made in a light, fresh style with little or no oak, preserving the grape's bright fruit and natural high acidity. The colour is bright cherry red. The nose offers red berries, redcurrant and cherry with cracked black pepper and a herbal, briny lift. The palate is light bodied and crisp, with low alcohol, juicy fruit and a tangy, saline finish. Serve cool at 13 to 14 degrees. It is a versatile food wine that can stand in for a white, pairing with oily fish, poultry and charcuterie.
