A 58-year continental Long Pond from Gordon and MacPhail, drinking like liquid history with floral, herbal and olive notes over tropical fruit, fine old oak, leather and a tannic, peppery close, bottled unsweetened at 50%.
Description
This is an extraordinary survivor: Long Pond distilled in 1941 and aged 58 years in Europe before bottling by the venerable Scottish house Gordon and MacPhail at 50%. Continental ageing in cool conditions is what allowed a spirit to spend nearly six decades in oak without being stripped bare, and the result is one of the oldest Jamaican rums most drinkers will ever encounter.
Molasses-based and from the historic Wedderburn house's pot still, it opens floral and herbal with ester, spice and citrus, then a palate of banana, tropical fruit and leather met by firm tannins. The finish runs warm, peppery and woody. Decades of maturation have layered elegance and old-oak depth over a still-detectable funk, yielding a subtle, evolving, contemplative rum that drinks like a piece of distilling history. Certified unsweetened, best slow and neat for a quiet session.
