Description
Gómez Cruzado produces Montes Obarenes in D.O.Ca. Rioja, from Tempranillo Blanco and Viura, at a house founded in 1886 in the Barrio de la Estación in Haro. The winery built its name on fine wines aged in the French style, and that approach carries into this white. The wine spends twelve months in French oak barrels and concrete tanks, a combination that shapes its character, the oak allowing slow oxygen exchange and gentle toast to add texture and a nutty edge, the concrete keeping part of the blend fresh and preserving the fruit's mineral definition. Tempranillo Blanco brings citrus and body, Viura the structure and ageing capacity long associated with white Rioja. Time on the lees during ageing adds a creamy, savoury weight. The colour is bright gold. The nose is layered, white peach and orchard fruit with vanilla, toasted bread and beeswax. The palate is broad and textured, honeyed and gently nutty with almond and citrus peel, the oak well integrated behind a firm, mineral finish. At 13.5% it is balanced and savoury. Serve at 11 to 13 degrees in a full glass.

Additional information
The oak-aged texture suits hake and cod in sauce, roast chicken and grilled pork. It also stands up to Manchego and other nutty hard cheeses, where the savoury, almond character works well.
