Gómez Cruzado El Predilecto is a Rioja Alta red from the historic Haro station district, blending Garnacha and Tempranillo from high vineyards in the Sierra Cantabria and Najerilla. Five months in French oak keep the bright cherry and red-berry fruit fresh.
Description
Gómez Cruzado El Predilecto is made in Haro, in the famous station district of Rioja Alta where many of the region's classic wineries are clustered. The winery, founded in 1886, draws its fruit from three high zones of Rioja Alta, in the Sierra Cantabria and the Najerilla and Alto Najerilla valleys, all farmed sustainably. The blend pairs Garnacha with Tempranillo grown on the chalky clay and limestone soils typical of the area. The cool, Atlantic-influenced climate and the altitude of these sites slow ripening and preserve acidity, giving a fresher, more red-fruited style of Rioja. The wine sees just five months in French oak, a short ageing that adds a light frame of spice and a touch of vanilla while keeping the fruit forward and vibrant. The colour is a bright cherry red. The nose shows fresh red berries, cherry and plum with a gentle herbal and peppery lift from the oak. The palate is medium bodied at 14%, juicy and supple with soft tannins, fresh acidity and a clean finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, with a short chill on a warm day. It works with grilled pork, roast poultry and mushroom dishes.
