Forjas del Salnés makes this fragrant Atlantic red in Rías Baixas, a rare Loureiro vinified dark. Grown on sand and granite near the sea, it spends twelve months in used French oak and shows red berry, cherry and floral lift at just 12.5 percent.
Description
Forjas del Salnés is a small family winery founded in 1912 in the Salnés valley of Rías Baixas, working since 1995 with winemaker Raúl Pérez alongside Rodrigo Méndez. Goliardo Loureiro takes an aromatic Atlantic variety usually bottled as white and vinifies it as a pale, perfumed red. The vineyards sit on sand over granite close to the sea, where cool nights and constant Atlantic influence hold acidity high and keep alcohol low at 12.5 percent. The wine ages twelve months in used French oak barrels, which adds texture and gentle oxygen exchange without overlaying the fruit, and the saline maritime soils carry through to a savoury, briny edge on the finish. The colour is light ruby. The nose leads with red berry, cherry and a clear floral note of rose and white flowers, with a twist of black pepper. The palate is light and fresh, with fine tannin, a mineral cut and that signature salinity. Serve lightly chilled at 13 to 14 degrees in a Burgundy glass. It works as a flexible table red with grilled fish, roast chicken and charcuterie.
