Description
Schloss Gobelsburg sits in Kamptal in Lower Austria and traces its origins to the Cistercian abbey of Zwettl in 1171, making it the oldest winery on the edge of the Danube. Urgestein means primary rock, the weathered gneiss and mica schist bedrock that defines the best Kamptal sites. These poor, free draining soils restrict vigour and push the vine to send roots deep, which concentrates the fruit and carries a clear stony character into the glass. The continental climate gives warm days and cold nights, and that wide diurnal range preserves the natural acidity that marks dry Austrian Riesling. Fermentation and ageing in stainless steel keep the wine reductive and precise, protecting primary fruit and letting the site speak without any oak. It is pale straw with a green tint. The nose is citrus led, with lemon, green apple and white peach, and the palate is taut and bone dry, driven by a mineral, saline finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
