Signatory Vintage's Collection Plume range presents bottlings selected for cask quality rather than age, often presenting younger whiskies from active casks at high strength. This Glenrothes 9 Years Old was filled in 2015 to a single Oloroso butt designated cask 18 and bottled in 2024 at 64.2%, with the 681 bottle outturn destined for the French market. The volume implies the cask was a full Oloroso butt running close to its original capacity after nine years of evaporation.

A nine year Oloroso first fill cask at 64.2% delivers concentrated sherry character without the rancio depth that develops over much longer maturations. Hemicellulose breakdown produces furfural and the early stages of caramelised sugar chemistry; lignin's vanillin and syringaldehyde contributions are more restrained at this age. The cask's residual sherry residue dominates the early ageing while European oak tannin builds structure that softer maturation windows would not yet require.

The nose lifts dried fruit and honey with a leathery undertone signalling the cask's first fill activity. The palate runs through raisin, fig and date, the 64.2% strength delivering depth without softening; cocoa nib bitterness emerges mid palate as oak tannins assert themselves. The finish closes long and resinous, the cask still in active extraction mode rather than slow tail drift.
