Description
Hart Brothers' Finest Collection Cask Strength range presents young to mid age single malts at natural strength, drawn from active sherry and bourbon casks. The Glasgow based bottler has operated since 1964 and runs the Finest tier alongside its Cask Strength and Private Collection ranges. This Glenrothes 8 Years Old, distilled in 2014 and bottled in 2023 at 52.5%, was vatted from Oloroso casks for European markets.
Eight years in active Oloroso casks produces a youthful but cask forward profile. European oak's tannin contribution accumulates faster than in refill bourbon at the same age, while the cask's residual oxidised sherry transfers densely to the spirit. Lignin's breakdown contributes vanillin and syringaldehyde alongside fresh furfural from hemicellulose chemistry. The relatively soft 52.5% strength keeps the cask in balance rather than letting it overwhelm the spirit's natural Speyside ester profile.
The nose lifts honey and cooked fruit with vanilla underneath, chocolate threading through and a citric lift signalling preserved spirit acidity. The palate carries dried apricot, raisin and a fresh oak signature, with new wood notes pointing to active first fill or younger cask chemistry. The finish runs medium with European oak grip closing around the spirit's residual sweetness, the cask still in active extraction mode at this age.
