Description
Claxton's Warehouse No. 8 series sits alongside Warehouse No. 1 in the Yorkshire bottler's range, with the numbered warehouse banners distinguishing batches of releases over time. This Glenrothes 8 Years Old, distilled in 2014 and bottled in 2023 at 55.8%, draws from a single Port cask designated C23087, with 80 bottles destined for European markets. The small outturn suggests a hogshead format and notable angel's share.
Eight years in a Port cask develops the fruit forward chemistry that distinguishes Port maturations from sherry. Port casks arrive seasoned with a fortified red wine carrying more residual red fruit aromatics and softer tannins than Oloroso or PX. The transfer to whisky brings red berry, stone fruit and a polished oak signature, with the cask's residual port sugars contributing without the heavier oxidised aldehydes of long oxidative sherry styles. European oak still delivers its lignin and tannin extractions, but at a younger, less developed stage.
The nose lifts ripe strawberry, dried cherry and a vanilla undertone, the Port cask's fruit chemistry running clearly over Glenrothes' natural Speyside character. The palate carries red berries, soft chocolate and a mid palate spice from European oak, the 55.8% strength delivering the cask's contribution without overwhelming the spirit's youth. The finish runs medium with a gentle tannin grip, suggesting the cask had more to give if the spirit had been allowed longer maturation.
