Description
whic (Whiskycircle) is a German independent bottler operating multiple themed ranges including Freaky Firkins, a programme built around small firkin casks of roughly forty litres. The reduced volume sharpens cask interaction in the closing stages of maturation, a parallel to the octave concept used by other bottlers. This Glenrothes 8 Years Old, distilled in 2013 and bottled in 2021 from cask 1690A at 58.7%, runs to 184 bottles released into the German market.
Red wine firkins at firkin scale concentrate cask chemistry through high surface area to spirit ratio. The cask arrives seasoned with a red wine carrying residual anthocyanins, tannins and red fruit aromatics distinct from the Oloroso or PX chemistry of sherry maturations. When transferred to whisky, the cask contributes red berry, soft tannins and a polished oak signature, while at firkin scale the spirit interacts with substantially more wood per litre than a standard hogshead would deliver.
The nose lifts red berry and dried cherry with polished oak underneath, the firkin's concentrated red wine chemistry clearly forward. The palate moves through cooked red fruit, soft chocolate and a developing tannin grip from the small format's amplified European oak signature. The 58.7% strength delivers the cask's contribution without scorching the spirit's natural Speyside ester chemistry. The finish runs medium long and tannic, the firkin's sharpened extraction leaving structural close around the red wine residue.
