Glenrothes 38 Years Old 1980 Cask #7202 (Adelphi)

Adelphi's Limited range presents the firm's deepest aged single casks at natural strength under direct cask identification. The Scottish company revived the historic Glasgow distillery name in the late 1990s and went on to build Ardnamurchan distillery in the West Highlands. This Glenrothes was distilled in 1980 and bottled in 2019 from cask 7202 at 40.2%, with 176 bottles released into Italy.

Thirty eight years in a single Oloroso cask sits in the deepest extractive window for sherry maturation. The cask's first fill activity has long since exhausted, with the spirit driven entirely by accumulated secondary and tertiary chemistry. Lignin's slow breakdown continues to deliver syringaldehyde and vanillin at very attenuated levels, hemicellulose's furfural has fully developed, and the residual Oloroso sherry's sotolon has built into deep rancio depth. The natural reduction to 40.2% reflects nearly four decades of evaporation, the alcohol fraction giving way to water without intervention.

On the nose, deep rancio sits with fig, prune and old wood resin, the cask's accumulated oxidative chemistry fully forward. Walnut shell and polished oak thread through, with a savoury saline note signalling extended cask interaction. The palate moves through dried fruit syrup, dark chocolate and a developing leathery quality, with 40.2% strength delivering the cask's accumulated depth with minimal interference. The finish runs very long and resinous, the cask's accumulated chemistry leaving a slow tail of dried fruit and wood.
