Description
The Whisky Agency partnered with Blocks for a fifteenth anniversary bottling, marking the milestone of the whisky club's continuous operation. TWA's regular collaboration model brings the firm's deep aged stocks to private and trade partners' anniversary or themed releases. This Glenrothes was distilled in 1985, vatted from refill bourbon casks, and bottled in 2023 at 43.4% across European markets.
Thirty seven years of refill bourbon ageing creates an entirely distillery led profile. The cask's first fill activity exhausted under previous tenancy, the wood contributes minimally beyond the slow secondary chemistry of long maturation: vanillin, syringaldehyde and lactones building gradually rather than aggressively. The natural reduction to 43.4% reflects nearly four decades of evaporation in higher humidity warehousing, the alcohol fraction giving way to water without intervention. A multi cask vatting smooths individual cask variation while preserving the soft, distillery led character.
The nose carries citric lift over hay barn warmth, with fresh apple, cooked pear and honey threading through. A new wood note signals the remaining vitality of the cask's slow tertiary chemistry. The palate runs through honeyed barley, beeswax and a faint malt extract sweetness, the 43.4% strength delivering the spirit's preserved acidity and natural Speyside fruit with minimal cask interference. The finish is long, soft and lingering, the cask leaving the spirit's accumulated maturation clear at the front rather than masking it.
