Description
The Whisky Agency's seasonal releases — Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter — present curated vattings drawn from the firm's deep aged stocks. Winter 2020 is part of that ongoing programme, with Carsten Ehrlich's selection emphasising the cask character that characterises each release window. This Glenrothes was distilled in 1989 and bottled in 2020 at a naturally reduced 44.4% from refill bourbon casks, with 268 bottles released globally.
Thirty one years of refill bourbon ageing produces a profile fundamentally led by distillery character. The cask's first fill activity exhausted under previous tenancy, the wood contributes through accumulated secondary chemistry: lignin's slow breakdown delivers syringaldehyde and vanillin at attenuated levels, lactones produce coconut and creamy oak, and ellagitannins build structure gradually. The natural reduction to 44.4% reflects three decades of angel's share evaporation in higher humidity warehousing, the alcohol fraction giving way slowly to water.
On the nose, citric lift sits over a coal gas note signalling deep oxidative chemistry, with fresh fruit and a fragrant lift threading through. Malt extract emerges underneath with a faint rubbery character that signals the cask's tertiary ageing chemistry. The palate runs honeyed and gentle with cooked pear, lemon curd and a clean vanilla pod note, the 44.4% strength delivering preserved acidity with minimal cask interference. The finish is long, soft and lingering, the cask's exhausted tannin signature giving the spirit clear room to express its accumulated character.
