Description
Signatory Vintage's Cask Strength Collection occasionally vats sibling casks of identical age and distillation to produce a single release at slightly higher volume than a single cask alone would deliver. This Glenrothes 24 Years Old combines casks 3144 and 3145 from the 1996 distillation, bottled in 2021 at 49.4% with 309 bottles for the Netherlands market. The twin cask approach allows Signatory to release a coherent expression at meaningful volume while preserving the cask character that single cask collectors expect.
Twenty four years in refill bourbon casks produces a profile fundamentally led by distillery character. The casks' first fill activity exhausted under previous tenancy, the wood contributes through accumulated secondary chemistry: lignin's slow breakdown delivers syringaldehyde and vanillin at attenuated levels, lactones produce coconut and creamy oak through cumulative contact, and ellagitannins build structure gradually. The 49.4% strength reflects long evaporation across both casks, with the natural reduction preserving the spirit's character without intervention.
The nose carries honey and vanilla pod with an old wood resin undertone, a faint yeasty note signalling preserved spirit chemistry from long cask interaction. The palate moves through cooked pear, lemon curd and a clean toasted oak undertone, the 49.4% strength delivering distillery character with minimal cask interference. The finish is long and softly drying, the casks' diminished tannin signature giving the spirit's preserved Speyside fruit clear room to express.
