Description
Whisky AGE is a Dutch independent bottler operating a numbered series approach to its releases, with each entry given a sequential identifier rather than a themed name. This Glenrothes 23 Years Old, distilled in 2000 and bottled in 2023 from cask 1359 at 55.1%, sits within the No. 0023 release with 222 bottles destined for the Netherlands market.
Twenty three years in a bourbon cask, likely a refill, produces a fundamentally different profile than a first fill bourbon of similar age. With the cask's initial vanillin reserves softened by a prior tenant, the wood contributes more gently over the long maturation, allowing the spirit's natural Speyside ester chemistry to lead. Lignin's slow breakdown still delivers syringaldehyde and vanillin, but at attenuated levels; lactones produce coconut and creamy oak through long contact rather than aggressive early extraction.
The nose carries citric lift over honeyed barley, with vanilla and white peach threading through. The palate moves into dried apple, lemon curd and gentle oak spice, the 55.1% strength sitting comfortably without pressing the cask forward. The finish runs long and softly drying, with the bourbon cask's diminished tannin signature leaving the spirit's preserved acidity and Speyside fruit at the front rather than the wood.
