Description
Sansibar Whisky GmbH operates The Clans Label as one of its themed bottling lines, distinct from the firm's White Label series, with each release given a Scottish clan identity. Sansibar is a German indie founded in 2008 and named after the legendary Sylt beachfront bar. This Glenrothes 22 Years Old, distilled in 1997 and bottled in 2019 at 57.6% from Oloroso casks, runs to 99 bottles released into the event market.
Twenty two years in Oloroso casks sits in the rich middle window for sherry maturation moving toward long extractive territory. The casks' first fill activity remains in late stage extraction with European oak's tannin contribution matured into structure rather than aggression. The residual Oloroso sherry residue has fully integrated through accumulated cask interaction, while lignin's breakdown delivers vanillin and syringaldehyde alongside hemicellulose's furfural chemistry. The cask's sotolon contributes the savoury walnut depth characteristic of well aged Oloroso.
On the nose, sherried sweetness sits with a citric lift, cooked and dried fruit threading through alongside polished oak. Fresh fruit and honey emerge underneath. The palate moves through fig, raisin and a savoury walnut depth, with 57.6% strength delivering the cask's accumulated chemistry without astringency. Cocoa nib bitterness emerges mid palate. The finish runs long and gently tannic, European oak holding the spirit's Speyside fruit in tight balance against the cask's oxidative chemistry.
