Description
Sansibar's Clans Label series releases bottlings under Scottish clan identities, with this 1996 vintage of Glenrothes joining the 1997 release covered earlier in the line. Sansibar is a German indie founded in 2008 and named after the legendary Sylt beachfront bar. This Glenrothes 22 Years Old, distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2019 at 51.1% from Oloroso casks, runs to 238 bottles released into the event market.
Twenty two years in Oloroso casks sits in the rich middle window for sherry maturation moving toward long extractive territory. The casks' first fill activity remains in late stage extraction with European oak's tannin contribution matured into structure rather than aggression. The residual Oloroso sherry residue has fully integrated through accumulated cask interaction, while lignin's breakdown delivers vanillin and syringaldehyde alongside hemicellulose's furfural chemistry. The cask's sotolon contributes the savoury walnut depth characteristic of well aged Oloroso.
On the nose, fresh fruit sits with sherried sweetness, a citric coal gas lift signalling oxidative chemistry and dried fruit threading through alongside a greenhouse note pointing to preserved ester chemistry. The palate moves through fig, raisin and a savoury walnut depth, with 51.1% strength delivering the cask's accumulated chemistry without astringency. The finish runs long and gently tannic, European oak holding the spirit's Speyside fruit in tight balance.
