Description
Douglas Laing has bottled Scotch independently since 1948, now operating under fifth generation family ownership from its Glasgow base. The Old Particular range presents single cask bottlings at natural strength, with the Spirit Animal Series a sub branding for select releases. This Glenrothes 18 Years Old, distilled in 2005 and bottled in 2023 at 58.4% from cask DL 17356, runs to 641 bottles for the German market.
Eighteen years in a single Oloroso cask sits in the rich middle window for sherry maturation, with the cask's first fill activity well developed but not yet exhausted. European oak's tannin contribution has matured into structure rather than aggression, while the residual Oloroso sherry residue has fully integrated with the spirit through accumulated cask interaction. Lignin breakdown produces vanillin, syringaldehyde and eugenol, hemicellulose contributes furfural and caramelised sugar precursors, and the sherry's sotolon delivers the savoury walnut backbone.
The nose lifts raisin and fig with polished oak underneath, the cask's developed sherry signature clearly forward. The palate moves through chocolate orange, dried prune and a leathery quality as rancio takes hold, with 58.4% strength delivering the cask's depth without astringency. The finish runs long and tannic, European oak holding the spirit's Speyside fruit in tight balance against the cask's accumulated oxidative chemistry.
