Description
Based in Glasgow, Meadowside Blending is an independent firm specialising in single cask bottlings under its Maltman label. The range focuses on selecting individual casks at maturity rather than running long sherry programmes, presenting whiskies at natural strength without colouring or chill filtration. This Glenrothes 15 Years Old was distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2025 at 53.7% from a single Oloroso cask, one of 269 bottles released into European markets.
Fifteen years in an Oloroso cask gives the spirit time to absorb oxidised sherry residue while the wood itself contributes through slow tannin and lignin extraction. The European oak typical of Oloroso butts carries more tannin and less vanillin than American oak, so the maturation tilts toward dried fruit and savoury depth rather than overt vanilla sweetness. Glenrothes' wash and spirit stills produce a relatively heavy, fruity new make, and the cask's structure helps frame that natural body rather than mask it.
The nose opens on a grainy cooked mash note backed by raisin, dried fig and warm baking spice. The palate carries those darker fruits into a chocolate orange register, with 53.7% delivering tannin without harshness. The finish is medium long, drying gently as the European oak's grip closes around residual fruit sweetness.
