Description
Archives is the bottling arm of the Whisky Nerds shop in Den Bosch, Netherlands, presenting single casks under themed artistic labels rather than the uniform graphic design of larger indie bottlers. The Fishes of Samoa series uses marine creature illustrations to identify individual releases within an ongoing programme. This Glenrothes 15 Years Old, distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2022 from cask 5815 at 61.7%, runs to 266 bottles released into European markets.
Fifteen years in a single bourbon cask at sustained 61.7% delivers concentrated American oak chemistry. The cask sat in lower humidity warehousing favouring water rather than alcohol evaporation, keeping the spirit at high strength. Lignin's breakdown contributes vanillin and syringaldehyde, lactones produce coconut and creamy oak, and ellagitannins build structure. At this strength the cask's contribution presses through sharper than in softer reductions, framing the spirit's natural Speyside ester chemistry with a firmer wood signature.
The nose lifts hay barn warmth and honey with vanilla pod underneath, fresh apple threading through and an oily character pointing to esters preserved at high strength. The palate runs honeyed and waxy with cooked pear and lemon curd, the 61.7% strength delivering the cask's vanillin and lactone chemistry without softening. The finish is long and oily, with American oak holding the spirit's Speyside fruit in balance against the bourbon cask's full extractive contribution.
