Description
Adelphi Selection is the flagship independent bottling range of Adelphi, the Scottish company that revived the historic Glasgow distillery name in the late 1990s and went on to build Ardnamurchan distillery in the West Highlands. The Selection presents single casks at natural strength under direct cask number identification. This Glenrothes 15 Years Old, distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2023 at 59.6% from cask 10234, runs to 389 bottles destined for Italy.
Fifteen years in a single Oloroso cask at sustained 59.6% delivers concentrated cask interaction. The cask sat in lower humidity warehousing favouring water rather than alcohol evaporation, keeping the spirit at high strength. European oak's tannin contribution accumulates aggressively at this abv, while the cask's residual oxidised sherry combines with lignin's vanillin and syringaldehyde extractions. The cask's first fill activity is well developed by this age, with the wood now contributing through accumulated secondary chemistry alongside its remaining active extraction.
The nose lifts a sherried sweetness layered over old wood resin with a citric lift threading through, the cask's mature oxidative chemistry clearly at the front. The palate moves through malt extract, raisin and dark chocolate, the 59.6% strength delivering the cask's full extractive load without softening. The finish runs long and tannic, European oak's grip closing around the spirit's residual sweetness with developing rancio underneath.
