Description
Whiskydudes is a smaller Dutch independent label specialising in single cask bottlings under direct cask number identification rather than themed series. This Glenrothes 13 Years Old was distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2023 from cask 8965A, a Pedro Ximenez cask, with 138 bottles drawn at 63.9% destined for the event market. The cask reference suggests a sub division of a parent cask 8965, possibly indicating a butt that was split into smaller casks during maturation.
Thirteen years in a Pedro Ximenez cask at a sustained 63.9% delivers concentrated sherry chemistry alongside aggressive European oak interaction. PX is the heaviest of the sweet sherries: the residual sherry inside an emptied butt carries sugar concentrations above 400 grams per litre, transferring densely to the spirit at high strength. Lignin's breakdown delivers vanillin and syringaldehyde while ellagitannins structure the spirit; the cask's first fill or active second fill activity drives the wood signature sharper at this abv.
The nose carries date paste, fig and a fragrant lift from the PX cask's preserved fruit chemistry, with a leathery undertone signalling oxidative depth from sustained sherry contact. The palate concentrates further at 63.9%: raisin syrup, dark chocolate and a savoury walnut depth, with European oak's grip pressing through hard. The finish runs long, tannic and slightly drying, the PX residual sweetness giving way to the cask's structural close.
