Description
Signatory Vintage's Whic Tarot is a collaborative bottling series with whic Whiskycircle, with each release given a tarot card identity. The Magician marks the first card (I) in the major arcana sequence, suggesting an opening release in the wider programme. This Glenrothes 13 Years Old, distilled in 2006 and bottled in 2020 from cask 9683 at 61.8%, runs to 329 bottles released into the German market.
Thirteen years in a single bourbon cask at sustained 61.8% delivers concentrated American oak chemistry. The cask sat in lower humidity warehousing favouring water rather than alcohol evaporation, keeping the spirit at high strength. Lignin's breakdown contributes vanillin and syringaldehyde, lactones produce coconut and creamy oak, and ellagitannins build structure. At this strength the cask's contribution presses through sharper than in softer reductions, framing the spirit's natural Speyside character with a firmer wood signature.
On the nose, honey sits with malt extract, vanilla pod and fresh apple underneath. The palate runs concentrated at 61.8%: cooked pear, lemon curd and a creamy oak undertone, with the high strength delivering the cask's vanillin and lactone chemistry without softening. A faint coconut lift emerges mid palate from active lactones. The finish is long and oak forward, the cask in active extraction at this age but holding the spirit's Speyside character in balance.
