Description
Douglas Laing's Old Particular range presents single cask bottlings at natural strength under direct cask identification, with the regular Old Particular tier sitting below the firm's XOP premium line. The Glasgow firm has bottled Scotch independently since 1948 and runs Old Particular as its main single cask programme. This Glenrothes 13 Years Old, distilled in 2005 and bottled in 2019 from cask DL 13413 at 57.3%, runs to 312 bottles released into the event market.
Thirteen years in a single Oloroso cask sits in the productive middle window for sherry maturation. The cask's first fill activity is well developed and European oak tannin contribution has matured into structure rather than aggression. The residual Oloroso sherry residue has fully integrated through accumulated cask interaction, while lignin's breakdown delivers vanillin and syringaldehyde alongside hemicellulose's furfural chemistry. The cask's sotolon contributes the savoury walnut depth that distinguishes mid aged Oloroso.
On the nose, raisin and fig sit with polished oak underneath, the cask's developed sherry signature clearly forward. The palate moves through dark chocolate, dried prune and a developing leathery quality, with 57.3% strength delivering the cask's depth without astringency. Cocoa nib bitterness emerges mid palate as oak tannins assert themselves. The finish runs long and tannic, European oak holding the spirit's Speyside fruit in tight balance against the cask's oxidative chemistry.
