Description
Duncan Taylor's Single Cask label is the firm's main bourbon and sherry programme, presenting individually selected casks at natural strength under direct cask number identification. The Aberdeen based bottler operates the Single Cask line alongside its Octave finishing range, working through deep broker held inventory. This Glenrothes 12 Years Old, distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2022 from cask 498963 at 54.6%, runs to 386 bottles released into European markets.
Twelve years in an active bourbon cask develops the American oak signature steadily without either rushing the wood or stalling its contribution. The cask's lignin breakdown contributes vanillin and syringaldehyde alongside lactones producing coconut and creamy oak, while ellagitannins build structure incrementally. At 54.6%, the cask sits in productive balance: enough strength to carry the wood signature through, soft enough that the spirit's natural Speyside character remains clearly framed.
On the nose, honeyed barley sits with vanilla pod, fresh apple and a faint coconut lift from active lactones. The palate runs through cooked pear, lemon curd and a creamy oak undertone, the 54.6% strength comfortable without pressing. The finish is medium long with a clean American oak grip, the cask leaving the spirit's Speyside fruit at the front rather than overwriting it with wood.
