Description
Meadowside Blending operates from Glasgow as an independent firm specialising in single cask releases under its Maltman label. The range focuses on cask quality at maturity rather than long sherry programmes, presenting whiskies at natural strength without colouring or chill filtration. This Glenrothes 10 Years Old, distilled in 2008 and bottled in 2019 from cask 9920 at 53.9%, runs to 355 bottles from a single Pedro Ximenez cask released into the German market.
Ten years in a Pedro Ximenez cask delivers a young but cask forward profile. PX is the heaviest of the sweet sherries: the residual sherry inside an emptied butt carries sugar concentrations above 400 grams per litre, transferring densely to the spirit. The cask's first fill activity remains in active extraction at this age, with European oak's tannin contribution accumulating at productive levels alongside lignin's vanillin and syringaldehyde breakdown. Hemicellulose furfural builds in the background.
On the nose, dark chocolate sits with dried fruit and a leathery undertone signalling cask oxidative chemistry. Malt extract emerges underneath with an oily depth signalling preserved ester chemistry. Sherried sweetness threads through. The palate moves through fig, raisin syrup and a savoury walnut depth, the 53.9% strength delivering the cask's PX residue without softening. Cocoa nib bitterness emerges mid palate. The finish runs long and tannic, European oak's grip closing tight around the residual PX sweetness.
