A 21 year old Glenfarclas from the distillery, at 54.5%. Rich and full, with raisin, fig and a bittersweet chocolate, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Run by six generations of the Grant family since 1865, one of Scotch’s last independents. Matured almost wholly in Oloroso sherry casks from Jerez. This is a deep, sherried Speyside single malt.

Description

This official Glenfarclas, a 21 year old, from 1998, cask 4449, at 54.5%, 258 bottles in all. Glenfarclas is a Speyside single malt, one of the last great family owned distilleries in Scotch. Direct firing chars the wash a little, lending the rich, nutty depth Glenfarclas is known for. It holds some sixty eight thousand casks on site in dunnage warehouses, with stock from every year since 1953.

Distilled to a rich, generous cut, for the rich, sherried make Glenfarclas is known for. It was fully matured in an Oloroso sherry cask, the wood deep in the rich spirit. Through oxidative maturity the esters concentrate, the orchard notes turning to raisin, fig and a dark chocolate. Long ageing turns the fresh notes towards date, prune and a dark, bittersweet chocolate. The full spirit deepens with time, the cask drawing out its darker register.

At 54.5%, undiluted, it is dark and full. Raisin, chocolate and a warm spice, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. The mouthfeel is full and coating, the fruit dark and sweet. The finish is rounded, dark and spiced. This is a full bodied Speyside single malt of real richness.
