Description
Glenfarclas from the distillery, a 46 year old, from 1966, cask 2603,2604,3551,3552, at 43.2%, 656 bottles in all. Glenfarclas is a Speyside single malt from Ballindalloch, in the heart of Speyside. Its water rises from the granite of Ben Rinnes, above the distillery at Ballindalloch. Its spirit is matured almost wholly in sherry butts brought up from Jerez. Direct firing chars the wash a little, lending the rich, nutty depth Glenfarclas is known for. Its six stills are the largest in Speyside and among the very few still fired directly, now by gas.
The spirit was distilled to a rich, generous cut, shaping a rich Speyside body with real weight. Maturation came in an Oloroso sherry cask, layered over the full Glenfarclas make. In its ethereal years the malt turns waxy and oxidative, faded esters and a whisper of sotolon over dark fruit. The cool, slow dunnage ageing loses little to evaporation, the spirit holding its depth.
At its natural 43.2% it is rich and chewy. Raisin, chocolate and a warm spice, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. A dark chocolate and a soft oak give it weight. The finish runs long, full and warming. This is a rich Speyside malt of dried fruit and nut.
