Description
This official Glenfarclas, a 9 year old, from 2002, cask 2655 + 2658, at 55.1%, released for a whisky festival. Glenfarclas is a Speyside single malt, one of the last great family owned distilleries in Scotch. It launched the 105 in 1968, one of the first cask strength single malts sold to the public. Its slow, cool dunnage maturation loses very little to the angels each year. Its whiskies are bottled at their natural colour, without chill filtration.
It was distilled to a rich, generous cut, for a weighty, nutty spirit the sherry then deepens. Maturation came in an Oloroso sherry cask, layered over the full Glenfarclas make. At an extractive age eugenol lends a clove note and lactones a coconut, the spirit rich, fruity and full. Maturation runs slow and even in the dunnage warehouses at Ballindalloch. Long ageing turns the fresh notes towards date, prune and a dark, bittersweet chocolate.
At a natural 55.1% it is full and rich. Orange, raisin and a treacle edge, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Fig, honey and a dark chocolate fill the middle. Dried fruit, spice and a soft oak see it out. This is a rich Speyside malt of dried fruit and nut.
