A 23 year old Glenfarclas from the distillery, at 46%. Rich and full, with raisin, fig and a bittersweet chocolate. Its water rises from the granite of Ben Rinnes, above Ballindalloch. Matured almost wholly in Oloroso sherry casks from Jerez. Run by six generations of the Grant family since 1865, one of Scotch’s last independents. This is Glenfarclas’s deep, fruity Speyside style.

This official Glenfarclas, a 23 year old, from 1990, cask 5096, 6441, 1189, at 46%, 1200 bottles in all. Glenfarclas, the glen of green grass, is a richly sherried Speyside single malt. Its whiskies are bottled at their natural colour, without chill filtration. It draws on that deep inventory for the Family Casks, single vintages reaching back to the 1950s. It launched the 105 in 1968, one of the first cask strength single malts sold to the public.
It was run slowly off the spirit still, for the rich, sherried make Glenfarclas is known for. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak gentle behind the spirit. In the oxidative, evaporative years the spirit concentrates to dried fruit, dark chocolate and a waxy, resinous depth. The cool, slow dunnage ageing loses little to evaporation, the spirit holding its depth. Maturation runs slow and even in the dunnage warehouses at Ballindalloch.
At 46% it is rich, fruity and deep. Orange, raisin and a treacle edge, lifted by a sweet oak. Beneath it run dried fruit, dark sugar and a warm spice. The finish is long, rich and spiced. This is a rich Speyside malt of dried fruit and nut.
