Description
Glenfarclas from the distillery, a 58 year old, from 1956, cask 1762, 1774, 2356, at 47.5%, 660 bottles in all. Glenfarclas is a Speyside single malt matured almost wholly in sherry casks from Jerez. Its whiskies are bottled at their natural colour, without chill filtration. It has been run by six generations of the Grant family, one of Scotch whisky's last truly independent houses.
The spirit was distilled in copper pot stills, shaping a rich Speyside body with real weight. Maturation came in an Oloroso sherry cask, layered over the full Glenfarclas make. At a great, fragile age oxidation rules, sotolon lending maple and dried fig as beeswax and old leather linger. The cool, slow dunnage ageing loses little to evaporation, the spirit holding its depth. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and a soft coconut over the fruit.
Bottled at a cask strength 47.5%, it is deep and concentrated. A deep, dark sweetness, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. The body is full and rich, the fruit deep and dark. The finish is long, rich and spiced. This is a richly sherried Speyside single malt.
