Description
A Glendronach, a distillery bottling, at 46.2%. Glendronach is a Highland single malt, revived from 2008 by Billy Walker's BenRiach company. It joined William Teacher and Sons in 1960 and became a core malt of the Teacher's blend.
The spirit was distilled to a rich, generous cut, for a weighty make built to take active Spanish oak. A marriage of Oloroso and Port casks held it, deep and dark in the rich make. With no age statement, vanillin reads as vanilla and oak lactones as coconut over the rich, fruity spirit. Years in oak deepen the spirit to a darker gold, the body growing rounder and more resinous with time. The wood frames the spirit without ever stripping the full Highland body. The full bodied spirit takes active wood well, carrying its dark sugars through the years. Long ageing turns the fresh notes towards date, prune and a dark, bittersweet chocolate.
Reduced to 46.2%, it is mellow and sweet. Raisin, chocolate and a warm spice, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. It is full and fruity, the spirit carrying the cask. A long finish carries raisin, chocolate and a treacle. This is a deep, sherried Highland single malt.
