Description
Glendronach from the distillery, at 55.3%. Glendronach is a richly sherried Highland single malt from the Valley of Forgue, built on full bodied spirit and Spanish oak. It was bought in 1920 by Charles Grant, a son of the founder of Glenfiddich. Its water is the Dronac Burn, which also gave the distillery its name. Its whisky is now overseen by the master blender Dr Rachel Barrie.
The spirit was taken gently through wash and spirit stills, giving a deep, full bodied Highland spirit. Maturation ran across Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherry casks, layered over the Glendronach spirit. Carrying no age, soft vanillin and dried fruit suggest a fair spell in active oak. Maturation runs slow and even in the traditional dunnage warehouses on the Forgue site. The casks are picked closely, the wood matched to the rich Glendronach make. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and a soft coconut over the fruit.
At a natural 55.3% it is full and rich. Baked apple, honey and a dark chocolate, with raisin, date and treacle from the cask. A baked apple and a warm cinnamon lift the middle. The finish is long, rich and spiced. This is Glendronach's deep, fruity Highland style.
