Description
A 37 year old Glendronach from La Maison du Whisky, distilled in 1972, from cask 705, at 53.3%, one of 275 bottles. Glendronach is a richly sherried Highland single malt from the Valley of Forgue, built on full bodied spirit and Spanish oak. By 1862 it had grown into the largest duty paying distillery in the Highlands.
The spirit was drawn from a thick, heavy wash, giving a deep, full bodied Highland spirit. Maturation came in an Oloroso sherry butt, layered over the full Glendronach make. At a great, fragile age oxidation rules, sotolon lending maple and dried fig as beeswax and old leather linger. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and a soft coconut over the fruit. The casks are picked closely, the wood matched to the rich Glendronach make. Active first fill sherry wood drives the maturation, the cask deep in the malt.
At a hearty 53.3% it carries real weight. Raisin, chocolate and a warm spice, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. The body is full and rich, the fruit deep and dark. The close is rich and dark, fruit over a warm spice. This is Glendronach's deep, fruity Highland style.
