Description
Glendronach from the distillery, a 24 year old, cask Batch 6, at 48.9%, 1180 bottles in all. Glendronach is a deep, dark Highland malt of dried fruit, chocolate and spice. By 1862 it had grown into the largest duty paying distillery in the Highlands. It was bought in 1920 by Charles Grant, a son of the founder of Glenfiddich. It was founded in 1826 by James Allardice, said to be the second man in Scotland to take a licence after the Excise Act of 1823.
It was run slowly off the spirit still, for a weighty make built to take active Spanish oak. An Oloroso cask held it, drawing the rich spirit on over the years. In the oxidative, evaporative years the spirit concentrates to dried fruit, dark chocolate and a waxy, resinous depth. The wood frames the spirit without ever stripping the full Highland body. Years in oak deepen the spirit to a darker gold, the body growing rounder and more resinous with time.
Bottled at a cask strength 48.9%, it is deep and concentrated. A deep, dark sweetness, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. A baked apple and a warm cinnamon lift the middle. Dried fruit, spice and a soft oak see it out. This is a rich Highland malt of dried fruit and chocolate.
