This official Glendronach, a 24 year old, from 1992, cask 226, at 58.4%, 554 bottles in all. Glendronach is a Highland single malt, founded in 1826 near Huntly in Aberdeenshire. It ferments in Oregon pine washbacks over long fermentations for a full, fruity spirit. Its whisky is now overseen by the master blender Dr Rachel Barrie.

The spirit was distilled in copper pot stills, giving a deep, full bodied Highland spirit. It was fully matured in an Oloroso sherry butt, the wood deep in the rich spirit. At this evaporative stage ellagitannins lend structure while oxidation builds a richer raisin and treacle. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and a soft coconut over the fruit. Long ageing turns the fresh notes towards date, prune and a dark, bittersweet chocolate. Maturation runs slow and even in the traditional dunnage warehouses on the Forgue site.

At a hearty 58.4% it carries real weight. A deep, dark sweetness, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Beneath it run dried fruit, dark sugar and a warm spice. It finishes long, full and fruity. This is Glendronach's deep, fruity Highland style.
