Description
La Maison du Whisky bottled this Glendronach, a 22 year old, distilled in 1995, from cask 3054, at 48.9%, one of 661 bottles. Glendronach is a Highland single malt known for its heavy Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry maturation. It was bought in 2008 by Billy Walker's BenRiach company, who rebuilt it as a heavily sherried single malt. It was bought in 1920 by Charles Grant, a son of the founder of Glenfiddich.
The spirit was drawn from a thick, heavy wash, for a weighty, full spirit the sherry casks then deepen. It was matured in a Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheon, the wood working deep into the malt. Through the evaporative decades the esters fold into raisin, fig, beeswax and a bittersweet chocolate. The wood frames the spirit without ever stripping the full Highland body. Active first fill sherry wood drives the maturation, the cask deep in the malt. The casks are picked closely, the wood matched to the rich Glendronach make.
At its natural 48.9% it is rich and chewy. Fig, walnut and a bittersweet chocolate, with raisin, date and treacle from the cask. It is full and fruity, the spirit carrying the cask. The finish is long, rich and spiced. This is the sherry led malt of Forgue.
