Description
A 20 year old Glendronach, a distillery bottling, from 1993, cask 13, at 52.6%, 668 bottles in all. Glendronach is a richly sherried Highland single malt from the Valley of Forgue, built on full bodied spirit and Spanish oak. It was founded in 1826 by James Allardice, said to be the second man in Scotland to take a licence after the Excise Act of 1823. The distillery was an early champion of sherry cask maturation, its malt charming Edinburgh society from the start.
The spirit was drawn from a thick, heavy wash, shaping a rich Highland body with real weight. It was fully matured in an Oloroso sherry butt, the wood deep in the rich spirit. Into oxidative maturity, slow air builds ripe esters and a darker chocolate, fig and date depth. The casks are picked closely, the wood matched to the rich Glendronach make. The full bodied spirit takes active wood well, carrying its dark sugars through the years.
At a natural 52.6% it is full and rich. A rich, sherried sweetness, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. The body is full and rich, the fruit deep and dark. Dried fruit, spice and a soft oak see it out. This is a deep, sherried Highland single malt.
