Description
Edition Spirits bottled this Glenburgie, a 21 year old, distilled in 2000, from cask HL 18756, at 58.9%, one of 244 bottles. Glenburgie is a fragrant Speyside malt, a core flavour of Ballantine's for decades. Its water is drawn from a local spring near the distillery.
It was run slowly off the spirit still, giving a fragrant, orchard led Speyside spirit. A bourbon barrel held it, the wood adding a soft honey over the orchard fruit. At oxidative maturity aldehydes lend a nutty edge while ellagitannins draw a gentle, drying grip across the fruit. Maturation runs slow and even in the cool Speyside warehouses. Built for the blender's art, the make ages with quiet grace as a single malt. Years in oak deepen the spirit to old gold, the body growing rounder and waxier with time. Long ageing turns the fresh apple towards beeswax, tropical fruit and a gentle spice.
At its natural 58.9% it is full and fruity. A delicate, soft malt with a waxy edge, over a gentle, creamy oak. Pear, grass and a creamy oak fill the middle. It finishes light, fresh and faintly waxy. This is Glenburgie's bright, orchard led Speyside character.
