Description
This Glenburgie was bottled by A.D. Rattray, a 13 year old, at 52.6%, bottled for a whisky festival. Glenburgie is a Speyside single malt, long the fruity heart of the Ballantine's blend. It was rebuilt in 1881 by Charles Chree Doig, the architect behind so many Speyside stillhouses. It sits near Alves in Moray, east of Forres, in the heart of Speyside.
It was taken gently through wash and spirit stills, for a soft, fruity spirit with a waxy thread. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending a creamy vanilla. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin rounding out as esters lend a riper apple, pear and a soft honey. Built for the blender's art, the make ages with quiet grace as a single malt. Maturation runs slow and even in the cool Speyside warehouses. Years in oak deepen the spirit to old gold, the body growing rounder and waxier with time.
At a hearty 52.6% it carries real weight. A soft, orchard led sweetness with a floral lift, lifted by a soft oak. A light orchard fruit and a soft spice give it shape. The finish is light, fruity and clean. This is a light, fruity Speyside single malt.
